Nautis vs Cabal: when the job is one good email a month

Cabal writes and sends investor updates with mail merge from your own inbox. Nautis drafts updates inside a startup workspace. How to choose between them.

Summarise

Cabal's site is short, and that fits the product. We read its homepage, pricing page, investor update page and the plain-text summary it publishes for AI tools, in October 2026. It doesn't publish a detailed feature table by plan, so this page is brief, and we've marked it as limited evidence.

If you haven't written an update before, start with the format. Our first investor update guide covers it, and either tool will then help you send it.

What happens to the update in each

Cabal's main point is that every investor gets an individual message and not a BCC, and replies come straight to your inbox. For a founder who wants a personal note to the lead investor inside a general update, that's a real help. Cabal also says it's useful for LP updates, event invitations and other bulk sends.

Why a private email matters here

A BCC update looks like a newsletter, and investors treat it that way. A private email with their first name and a specific ask, such as an intro to a named customer, tends to read as a real request. Cabal's mail merge fills the name in the subject and body, flags variables it doesn't recognise, and lets you edit the message for one recipient before sending. The guide on handling investor passes shows why keeping passed investors informed can matter too.

Cabal and Nautis on price

As of October 2026, Cabal says you can start for nothing, and Cabal Mail Pro adds collaborative drafts, engagement tracking and unbranded emails for $19 a month per user. We didn't see further plan limits, so check how many recipients the $0 start covers. Two founders on Pro would pay $38 a month.

Nautis costs $49, $99 or $129 a month for up to 5, 10 or 25 team members, after a 14-day trial and with no $0 tier. You'd only pay that if you wanted the rest of the workspace. Buying Nautis just to send updates makes no sense.

How to choose

  • Choose Cabal if you already have a good system for everything else, and a monthly email to investors is the gap. It sends through your existing Gmail or Outlook, and its template and examples are free to read.
  • Choose Nautis if you also lack a place for your fundraising pipeline, runway and tasks, and a reviewed monthly draft is enough. The draft draws on what's in the workspace, so a half-used workspace gives you a thin first version, and Nautis, public only since July 2026, has few independent reviews.
  • Use both if you like Nautis for operations but want Cabal's sending. Paste the Nautis draft into Cabal, then send. Choose one place to keep the investor list current, using the guidance in seed-stage startups.
  • Try the free route if you have five investors: a plain email and our investor update generator will carry you a long way.

What the pages we read don't cover

We didn't find a recipient limit, send limit or plan-by-plan comparison on the pages we read. The description of its pricing page refers to relationship intelligence for VC platform teams, deal sourcing and sales orgs, with premium plans from $49 a month, which looks like a separate line from Cabal Mail. We didn't read enough to describe it here. Cabal can answer questions on any of this directly.

FAQ

Which is better for investor updates in Nautis vs Cabal?

Cabal, if you want control over the send. It offers reusable lists, mail merge, private individual emails and open and click tracking on Pro. Nautis gives you a reviewed draft each month and leaves delivery largely to you, so it's a better fit for forming the habit than for fine-tuning a send.

How much does Cabal cost?

Its homepage says you can start for nothing, and Cabal Mail Pro costs $19 a month per user as of October 2026. Pro adds collaborative drafts, engagement tracking and unbranded emails.

Does Cabal send updates from my own email?

Yes, according to its site. You connect Gmail or Outlook, and each recipient gets a private email thread, so replies go to your inbox. It supports test emails, immediate delivery and scheduled sending.
