Nautis vs ChatGPT: when a general assistant is enough for a founder

Nautis vs ChatGPT for a founder: when a $20 assistant with connected apps is plenty, when it isn't, and how the two work together. Written by Nautis.

Summarise

Most founders reading this already pay for ChatGPT, or use it for free, and want to know whether they need anything else. Often they don't. A founder with one product, no investors yet and a tidy Google Drive can get a long way with a good assistant.

One note on sources: OpenAI's main pricing page and help center refused our automated reads on 31 October 2026. Everything below comes from OpenAI's product documentation at learn.chatgpt.com, which we could read. Plan details may be more complete on its main pricing page, so check there before buying.

Should you just use ChatGPT?

Yes, if most of these describe you. There's no point paying for a business system before you have business records to put in it.

  • You're working alone or with one co-founder, and you can hold the state of the company in your head.
  • Your questions are varied: market research, a legal term you don't know, a landing page draft, a SQL query, a difficult email.
  • Nobody else needs to approve what the AI does, and no investor is asking for monthly numbers yet.
  • You'd use a business tool's modules for fewer than three functions.
  • You want to spend $20 a month, not $49.

Nautis isn't a general assistant. Its AI advisors are tuned to running a startup, so ChatGPT is the better tool for a wide-ranging question, for writing code, and for anything unrelated to your company's records. You'd likely keep it for that reason even if you add Nautis.

What ChatGPT can do across your tools today

It can do more than chat. OpenAI's docs say ChatGPT Work carries out multi-step tasks using the files, apps and tools a person has access to, with steps running in the cloud or on an approved computer. Its plugins and MCP servers connect to systems such as GitHub, Slack and Google Drive. Scheduled tasks run on a timetable or, on eligible plans, from events in Gmail, Slack and GitHub.

It also has projects that keep chats, files and instructions together, and memory that carries context between chats. Controls exist as well. Admins can restrict an app to read-only or to approved actions, and the docs say app settings decide whether ChatGPT asks before using an app or making changes. Availability depends on plan and workspace settings, and not every app supports the same controls.

Building a founder briefing in ChatGPT, step by step

If you'd like to see how far it goes, try this before buying anything else, including Nautis. It's a realistic test of whether a general assistant can do chief-of-staff work for you.

  1. Create a project called Company and upload your latest financials, investor list and plan.
  2. Connect the apps that hold your live work, such as Gmail, Slack and Google Drive, where your plan allows it.
  3. Write instructions: what matters most this quarter, how to rank items, who your investors are, and what never to send.
  4. Set a scheduled task for 7:00 am on weekdays asking for what changed, what's blocked and what needs you today.
  5. Run it for two weeks, then check three things: what it missed, how often the numbers were stale, and how many corrections you made.

If the result is useful, you've saved yourself money. The usual sticking point is freshness. Step one needs repeating whenever the numbers change, because a spreadsheet you uploaded in September doesn't know about October, and it's nobody's job to keep it current. For a closer look at that decision, read build vs buy for an AI chief of staff.

What Nautis adds, and what it costs you

Nautis adds a place where the records live, so the assistant isn't reconstructing the company from files each morning. Investors move through stages in a Fundraising CRM, cash goes into a monthly Startup Health check-in, invoices have due dates, and the Chief of Staff reads all of it. The briefing needs no prompt, and you don't have to design a ranking, though you can adjust it with six priority sliders.

It also adds what a team needs: each person sees only what their role allows, requests wait in an Approval Center for an owner or admin, and every action is logged. Its WhatsApp channel turns a photographed receipt into an expense you approve, on workspaces where that's switched on.

The price for that is real. You have to move your work into a new system, it's a young product launched in July 2026, and its modules won't match a dedicated CRM or finance system for depth. It isn't an accounting system or a payroll provider. It's limited by a monthly credit allowance as well, so you can't use it as freely as an all-purpose chat.

What does each cost for a small team?

ChatGPT costs less for one or two people, and from three people the flat Launch price is lower, though the two prices cover different things. As of October 2026, OpenAI's docs list Free at $0, Go at $8 a month, Plus at $20, and Pro from $100 with options at $200 and $500. Business is $20 per user a month billed annually for two or more users, or $25 billed monthly. Enterprise and Edu go through sales. Those docs are centred on Codex and say that ChatGPT Work shares its usage limits and credits, and tasks that look similar can use different amounts of your allowance.

Nautis plans are $49, $99 or $129 a month, covering 5, 10 or 25 team members and 1,000, 2,000 or 2,600 AI credits. Yearly billing saves two months. It has no free tier beyond the trial. A three-person team on ChatGPT Business pays $60 to $75 a month. A team that size on Nautis Launch pays $49, plus whatever it still spends on an assistant for general work. See Nautis pricing for regional rates and full limits.

Do you have to choose between them?

No. You can connect Nautis to Claude or ChatGPT through an MCP connector, so the assistant you already use can work with your workspace. The Nautis Task Boards guide describes connected AI apps adding subtasks, creating goals and linking tasks to them. Treat it as a useful bridge, and read the AI-native vs AI add-on guide for why the two approaches behave differently.

Nautis itself also runs on outside models. Its AI Usage settings let you choose a provider, for example OpenAI, Anthropic or Gemini, for text features. So you aren't giving up model quality by choosing Nautis, and you aren't giving up business records by using ChatGPT. The real question is which system holds the truth about your company.

FAQ

Can ChatGPT replace an AI chief of staff?

For a solo founder with simple operations, often yes, using connected apps and a scheduled task. It gets harder once several people need permissions, approvals and shared records, or when numbers need to stay current without someone uploading them. Try a two-week test on your real work before you decide.

Does ChatGPT connect to Gmail and Slack?

OpenAI's documentation describes connections to systems such as GitHub, Slack and Google Drive, and scheduled tasks triggered by Gmail, Slack and GitHub events on eligible plans. It says availability depends on your plan and workspace settings, so check the app list in your own account.

Is Nautis built on ChatGPT?

Nautis is a separate product, and its AI Usage settings let an organization choose a model provider such as OpenAI, Anthropic or Gemini for text features. You don't need a ChatGPT account to use it. If you have one, you can connect Nautis to it through an MCP connector.

Is ChatGPT cheaper than Nautis?

Yes for an individual: Plus is $20 a month and Nautis starts at $49 as of October 2026. For a team, ChatGPT Business is $20 to $25 per user, while Nautis charges one price for up to five team members on Launch. A team on Nautis would probably still want a general assistant for non-company work.
